Number of Custom-Built Mobile Business Apps Soars 731 Percent

Business users are a great market for mobile technology, and the more useful mobile devices become, the more likely it becomes for businesses to adopt mobile technology. Mobile apps play a key role in how businesses use mobile technology – and according to new research from Good Technology, custom apps in particular are seeing huge growth in the business market.

Good Technology offers a mobility security platform that is used by businesses worldwide – and every quarter the company compiles broad data trends showing how those businesses are using their mobile devices. According to Good Technology's third quarter Good Mobility Index Report, business use of custom mobile apps increased an astonishing 731% over the same period a year earlier.

"The rapid rise in custom app development illustrates that organizations are seeing mobility as a real opportunity for competitive advantage and security as a critical requirement in enabling trusted mobility," said Good Technology CEO Christy Wyatt in a press release.

Wyatt also noted that non-custom mobile apps also are seeing strong gains in the business market.

Custom apps are now the number one category of all mobile apps used by businesses on Good Technology's platform, representing 28% of those apps. Close behind are document editing and document access, which were the second and third most popular apps, together accounting for 37% of all apps. Following them were secure browser, secure instant messaging and business intelligence apps.

Differences by Device

There are some key differences between how smartphone and tablet users use their apps, Good Technology found. Smartphone users are more likely to use apps such as secure instant messaging and secure browsing that enable them to get quick access to pertinent information. Tablet users are more likely to use their apps for more involved document-oriented workflows such as document editing and document access, researchers said.

Activations of iOS devices on Good Technology's platform increased between second and third quarter – increasing to 69% of activations, up from 67%. Android activations represented 29% of the total, while others, including the Windows Phone, represented 2%.

This and other trends illustrate the importance of mobility for the business sector, a key and growing market for wireless carriers. NetAmerica Alliance is working hard to ensure that rural based businesses also have access to this technology, which is helping them become more efficient, improve their bottom lines, and positively contribute to rural economies.
